Juror's notes: Beyond being well-rendered, this painting upended traditional floral painting in a way that is fresh, unpredictable and contemporary. The banding of tints to background pure hues of the flowers gives the piece a visual vibrancy that engages the viewer throughout the painting. As a juror, I look for creativity, technical merit, and an element of surprise in a painting. For me, this one hit it out of the park on all of these levels.
