Award Winner: Honorable Mention
Juror's notes: This painting drew me in with its color palette, but what sold me were the shapes. I consider good shapes to be the cornerstone of a strong composition. They must have a variety of sizes, be on different planes and have broken and varied edges. The distances between the shapes must all be different sizes too. That brings me to negative spaces and the shapes of those. I look at the negative shapes first because they’re the most important! As beautiful as the colors are in this painting, the shapes are even better – both the positive and the negative!
