Tuna Auction, Kii-Katsuura, Japan
10 x 15 inches
Award: First Place
Juror's Note: Though in color, the muted tones give this photograph a black and white presence. The tuna create interesting reiterating shapes as formal elements, but it is also hard to look past their gaping faces of horror. It is dark and beautiful. Aesthetically there is so much to look at– the sheen of the wet floor, the textures of the fish, the nameless lumbering figures being reflected. It's also hard to ignore one's own implication in the photo. What is each of our impact on this world?
