Plein Air painting and Alla Prima painting capture the essence of a scene, the attitude of a landscape, or the character of a moment. Most often completed in a single sitting, these works feature lively and impressionistic views, bold gestures, and impromptu mark-making. For the Plein Air and Alla Prima Exhibition, we’re looking for works that characterize these techniques and capture the fleeting moment. Whether painting in plein air or alla prima, we want to see work that expresses the spontaneity and immediacy of documenting the ever-changing world.

The juror for this show is Kathryn Stats.

About Kathryn

Screenshot 2025-10-02 at 2.13.48 PM.png

Kathryn developed a deep appreciation for landscape and nature while exploring the Utah countryside on horseback in her youth. She studied with artists in Salt Lake City for over 20 years and continues to draw inspiration from books and masters such as Vasily Polenov, Edgar Payne, and Clyde Aspevig.

Early in her career, she painted the rural landscapes of her childhood before turning her attention to the striking red rock formations of Southern Utah, which remain some of her most collected works. While influenced by many artists, her style is distinctly her own, resonating with collectors across a range of subjects. Her painting journeys have taken her far beyond Utah, to the coasts of California and Oregon and abroad to Alaska, Russia, Spain, Italy, France, and Portugal.
