Lean Into Abstraction invites artists to explore the power of non-representational art. This exhibition highlights works that emphasize form, color, gesture, and composition over literal imagery. Whether purely abstract or hinting at the tangible world, the focus is on meaning through abstraction. These artists employ abstraction to evoke emotions, challenge perceptions, and offer fresh visual perspectives.
This year’s juror, Scott Gellatly, is a Portland-based painter whose work bridges the realms of representation and abstraction. Using oil, casein, and monotype, he crafts vibrant, textured surfaces that reflect our connection to the natural world—making him an ideal juror for this show.

About Scott
Scott Gellatly is a Portland-based painter whose work is deeply informed by the Pacific Northwest landscape. Working in oil, casein, and monotype, Scott’s paintings balance representation and abstraction, blending expressive mark-making with rich, vibrant color. His work explores the tension between the real and the imagined, evoking the natural world while celebrating the tactile, luscious surface of paint. A landscape painter at heart, Scott captures the emotional essence of place through gestural forms, layered textures, and bold color relationships.
An Oregon native, Scott holds a degree in painting and drawing from the University of Oregon and has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions nationwide. His creative process draws from a lifelong connection to nature and a desire to explore how pictorial space can reflect both observation and imagination. He lives and works in Portland with his family.
